Flat Earth Society (2019)
I grew up in a house on Mitchell Street, Uniondale, a town 30 miles from New York. This work is a reimagining of that time and place using Google maps, a digital homecoming to a place I haven’t revisited in 50 years. The white structures are water towers. In the centre is a reworked photo of myself as a child with a Google place marker representing a balloon. One of my sisters, rendered as an embroidered figure (they liked to sew) is in the distance. Whenever they went shopping, they’d tie a balloon to my wrist and let me wander the store. When they were ready to leave, they’d look around for the balloon.
Flat Earth represents the misguided confidence and certainty of 50s America. We stood sure-footed on solid ground, everything was simple and I grew up reassured by that simplicity. Standing on a ball is far more precarious.
